Kyle Gibson and Orioles claim series victory over Yankees

NEW YORK – The Orioles have made quite a few loud statements in the first two months of the 2023 season. Their performance over the past week may be their most emphatic yet.

With a 3-1 win at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night, Baltimore capped off a 5-1 road trip of the American League East in which it won three games in Toronto and two of three games in New York. The O’s (33-17) dropped Tuesday’s opener in the Bronx, then bounced back to win impressively each of the past two nights.

In his previous appearance last Friday, Gibson threw seven innings with one run against Toronto, helping Baltimore open the trip with a win. The 35-year-old right-hander was even better against New York, throwing seven scoreless frames by taking two hits and four walks.

Gibson improved to 3-1 this season with a 2.52 ERA in four starts against AL East rivals.

The first run of the game was scored on an RBI-single in the fifth inning by Anthony Santander, who ended with a strikeout and reached base four times. The Orioles solidified their lead in the eighth, when Austin Hays hit a two-run double high off the right field wall.

The Baltimore bullpen then closed it out, as Mike Baumann struckout two during an 1-2-3 eighth and Yennier Cano – who got the ninth after Félix Bautista pitched the previous two nights – earned his fourth save.
