NEW YORK – Randy Vásquez seemed wide-eyed this week at his first personal major league game, observing nine innings from the Yankee Stadium dugout as a member of the club’s taxi team. He quietly imagined himself standing on the hill, in front of a packed house.

Promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill in as Domingo Germán completes his suspension, the 24-year-old Vásquez performed capably against a stacked lineup, but received little support as the Yankees’ bats were held in a 5 – 1 loss for the Padres on Friday night.

Juan Soto hit a two-run long home run into the second deck into right field by Vásquez, who is rated No. 12 in the Yankees’ organization by MLB Pipeline. Vásquez gave up four hits over 4 2/3 innings, walked three batters and struckout six batters in an 84-pitch effort.

Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a two-run homer into the second deck in left field facing Ron Marinaccio in the sixth inning, prompting jeers (and some cheers from out of town) from a celebratory sellout crowd of 46,724, arriving on the threshold of summer arrived for the start of a holiday weekend.

The Yanks were limited to six hits in 6 1/3 innings by Padres starter Joe Musgrove, with the lone run the right-hander allowed on a groundout by Anthony Rizzo in the sixth inning.
